Acupuncture

Healing Through Alternative Medicine

Acupuncture has been practiced in both animals and humans for thousands of years in China. The ancient Chinese discovered 361 acupoints in humans and 173 acupoints in animals.

What is acupuncture?

Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine (TCVM) has four main components: acupuncture, herbal medicine, food therapy and Tui-na (medical manipulation). Acupuncture usually involves inserting thin sterile needles into discrete and specific points on the body to cause a therapeutic effect but may include other methods.

Is acupuncture safe?

Yes! Acupuncture is a very safe medical procedure when administered by a qualified practitioner. Currently, Dr. Georgia Vella is the only doctor on staff performing acupuncture procedures. Dr. Vella received her training from the Chi Institute through innovative online and on-site lab practice.

How long does each session last?

A session usually takes 20 to 45 minutes; the first usually takes longer than follow-up sessions.

When will I see results and how many treatments are needed?

Sometimes results are seen immediately but others will require several treatments. Typically, a minimum of 3 to 5 treatments 1-2 weeks apart are needed for chronic conditions. Depending on the situation treatments can be done daily, weekly or monthly.

Does acupuncture hurt?

Rarely! Acupuncture points are stimulated using very fine needles, almost as thin as hair so it typically is not painful. Most patients are comfortable with acupuncture and due to the relaxation effect, some will fall asleep during treatment.

What can acupuncture help with?

  • Pain relief
  • Neurological disorders
  • Tissue healing
  • Gastrointestinal disorders
  • Immune system support
  • Chronic conditions: skin problems, asthma, cough, renal failure, chronic liver disease, behavioral problems, thyroid issues, geriatric weakness
  • Quality of life, cancer and hospice care

Testimonial from clients about acupuncture:

I have a large mixed-breed dog who as he reached his senior years was really starting to slow down. I had talked to Dr. Kidd about treatments options. He was relying more and more on pain meds to just make it through the day and the pain and medication were negatively impacting his quality of life. Dr. Kidd recommended trying acupuncture treatment. I was skeptical but willing to try something new if it meant we could forgo the pain pills. Gus has been receiving treatments for almost a year now and they have had such a positive impact on him. Not only is he more mobile than he was previously but we’ve also been able to drastically cut back on his need for pain medication. As an added bonus he actually enjoys going to the vet now and he gets so excited when Dr. Vella is mentioned because he thinks he’s going in for a treatment. It’s amazing to see how relaxed he gets at the vet’s office and during treatment. Typically he relaxes and sleeps during his treatment. Even family and friends have noticed a difference and can tell when he’s either just had acupuncture or is due to go back for another treatment. Gus will be 13 in a few months and I don’t think he would have such a high quality of life at this age if not for the acupuncture treatments.

Our German Shepherd Abby was diagnosed with a spinal cord disorder called degenerative myelopathy. Shortly thereafter she started receiving acupuncture treatments from Dr. Vella. We consistently see positive responses. Abby has increased mobility, improved sleep and her overall sense of well being almost instantly improves after treatment. Abby loves Dr. Vella and trusts her completely. We all do. Dr. Vella’s acupuncture skills and expertise have enhanced Abby’s quality of life. Her care is priceless and we are incredibly thankful.
